The Nebo Education Foundation meets each month at 7:00 a.m. to discuss submitted educational grant proposals for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning.

Stacy Nance, past president of the Nebo Education Foundation, said, “It is a pleasure to receive the grant applications and see how remarkable and creative the Nebo District teachers are. The Nebo Education Foundation facilitates these grant monies to help teachers realize their ideas and the students’ potential. As a foundation, we get to see a glimpse at how well our teachers are instructing our students. Our teachers are truly talented and utilize every penny. They do such a great job!”

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to inspire the minds of students.

Salem Junior – Bill Wright
“Thank you Nebo Foundation for supporting the fine arts at Salem Junior High! This grant help us have a full classroom set of iPads which will give all the students who come through my classroom the opportunity to not only have equal access to the same technology to turn in and document their artistic journeys, but will allow them the opportunity to learn how to use the digital tools that are being used in the current professional art world. Again, thank you for your aid in helping us purchase this invaluable classroom tool.” said Bill Wright, an art teacher at Salem Junior.

Salem Junior – Sara Barber
Sara Barber, an English teacher at Salem Junior said, “Thanks so much for this grant! Many of my students have ADHD or other issues that make it difficult for them to focus. These wobble stools will help them focus and increase their learning. The stools will increase the flexible seating options in the resource classrooms at Salem Junior High. They will help the classroom environment be more welcoming and help students more fully engage in learning. I am excited to add these to my classroom! Thanks again for your generosity and support!”

Wilson Elementary – Shamayne Cram, Melanie Kunz, Katie Bahr
First grade teachers at Wilson Elementary received grants for decodable readers.

Shamayne said, “Thank you Nebo Education Foundation! I'm super excited to use the grant for decodable books! I have been teaching for many years. My classroom books are old, tattered and outdated. Since starting the LETRS training, I have realized just how outdated my books are; and I am looking forward to books that align with the needs of my classroom! The books will be helpful for struggling readers who are still decoding. They fit perfectly with the skills the students are working on and what I am teaching. It means so much to me to see students get the right book into their hands. My favorite part of teaching is watching a child read a book then exclaim, ‘I read that all by myself!’ It is such a joy when students get excited to read a book at their level. Again, many thanks!”

Melanie said, “I am very excited and grateful to the generous grant awarded to me this year. I am a first-grade teacher who is striving to implement the science of reading in my classroom. One of the critical resources needed to implement this systematic instruction is decodable readers. My classroom has always had a great number of books in my library, but these texts are typically leveled readers. It is critical to expose students to decodable texts in a systematic way. I will use this grant to purchase decodable texts to be used with small group reading instruction. I am looking forward to using these books to benefit hundreds of first-grade students over many, many years of instruction.”

Katie said, “Thank you so much for the generous donation! I am so excited to receive these decodable books and let my students start reading them. These books will allow me to reach students at various levels of reading while setting them up for success. They build upon skills so the students will be able to feel confident while reading because they have mastered the previous skills. Not only will this year of students be impacted by these books, but several years to come. I look forward to using these books as a tool to create not only a reader but a confident reader. Thank you!”

Goshen Elementary – Janille Osborn
“Our grant is for decodables that we will be using for small group reading instruction.  The decodables will be very instrumental in teaching our students using what we have learned this year in our LETRS training.  It will help them practice and focus on the skills they need to be successful readers. We are so excited for this grant to help our students succeed.  Thank you Nebo Foundation!!” exclaimed Janille Osborn, a first-grade teacher at Goshen Elementary.
