Nebo Education Foundation Provides Grants April 2021

The Nebo Education Foundation continues to meet to discuss submitted educational grant proposals for students in Nebo School District. One of the goals of the foundation is to fund worthwhile projects in the district that provide resources to enrich student learning.

These grants are funded through the fund-raising efforts of the Nebo Education Foundation board. One fund-raising effort is the annual “Green Fever” golf tournament that helps fund these various grants throughout the year.  The “Green Fever” tournament is filling fast and has hole sponsorships still available. The Green Fever Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Hobble Creek golf course. The foundation also accepts donations from individuals and businesses to support projects.

Brian Rowley, president said, “Thank you to the many businesses and individuals that provide tremendous support of our students. Because of your donations, the Nebo Education Foundation is able to provide resources to teachers to enhance the quality of education for our students in the classroom.”

Congratulations to the following teachers that continue to bless the minds of students.

Brookside Elementary – Darla Stapel
“This donation, along with matching funds from our principal, Mrs. Beckert, will provide for many reading intervention books that are so needed for our first-, second-, and third-grade teachers. We use these books to teach reading, phonics, spelling, writing, etc. to our students in small groups during our reading block of time. Our biggest problem has been needing books that someone else is using. With approximately 220 students all being taught in small groups at the same time, you can imagine the struggle with having enough appropriately leveled books.” stated Mrs. Stapel. “This grant will allow our teachers and reading intervention specialists to run a successful reading program and not be hindered by a lack of books to instruct with. We will now be able to have more students reading on their correct reading level at the same time. Thanks to this grant, we know that we can meet the needs of countless students now and in the years to come. Thanks for making our day with this wonderful gift. All of us are so thrilled.”

Valley View Middle – Alina Kerns
Alina Kerns, a math teacher at Valley View Middle said, “I am so grateful to the Nebo Education Foundation for granting the funds to get some alternative seating for my classroom. I have students who are fidgety and have trouble concentrating, and it can impact their ability to learn. These moving ‘wobbly’ chairs will provide an outlet for that movement that wouldn't have been possible without this generous grant. I told some of my students about the chairs and their faces lit up! I'm just as excited as my students are that they now have a seating option that helps them to get out some of the wiggles while still remaining seated and learning. Thank you from me and my students!”

Spanish Oaks Elementary – Megann McKendrick
“The fourth grade at Spanish Oaks Elementary uses Scholastic News articles to instantly engage students in real life scenarios of science, social studies, technology, and other relative news around the world in a kid friendly way. The online resources from this bundle add to their learning with the engaging debates, videos, quizzes, and educational games. What makes it even more wonderful is that the articles change reading levels throughout the year to help students increase their comprehension and fluency. The students LOVE Scholastic News and we are so excited to have them in our classrooms this year. Thank You!” exclaimed Megann McKendrick, fourth-grade teacher at Spanish Oaks Elementary.

Cherry Creek – Susan Deardeuff
“Our class is so excited to receive this grant from the Nebo Foundation! As a class we made a wish list of books that we would love to have in our classroom to read. A lot of my books are older and some are completely falling apart. The students LOVED being able to be part of the process of choosing books for our classroom library that they are interested in and are excited to read. When they found out that we received the grant, they cheered and started talking about what book they wanted to read first. With this grant we will be able to add over 70 brand new books to our classroom library that I know will be read and loved!,” stated Susan Deardeuff, instructional coach at Cherry Creek Elementary.

Mapleton Junior – Kourtney Shumway
“Let me start off by saying... Thanks, Mahalo, Gracias, Merci, Danke sehr, Grazie, THANK YOU!! There are not enough thank you's in the world to express my appreciation and gratitude towards the Nebo Education Foundation for the grant awarded to Mapleton Junior High Dance department.  The money awarded will be spent on dance costumes so that when the students have a dance performance, they will feel professional and more confident as they perform. I plan to buy costumes that can be used for several years to help keep the costs down for future classes. MJHS is one of the few junior highs in the district with a dance program. It has been very difficult to fund the program because we haven't been able to fundraise or charge any fees for costumes. When performances come around, it has been a challenge to find a costume (which has usually been students find their own t-shirt) to help showcase the talent and hard work that the students have put into the dance class. This grant means so much to me and the students to help continue to build the confidence that I see every day in the classroom. These costumes will help the students shine each time they perform. Thank you again!” exclaimed Kourtney Shumway, a dance teacher at Mapleton Junior.
